フランスの物理学者フーコーは、回転する円板を用いて地球の自転を確かめる実験を行いました。この装置は、地球の自転を見るものという意味で「ジャイロスコープ」と名づけられました。現在、このような高速回転するローターやローターをケースに収めた装置を指して一般に｢ジャイロ｣と呼んでいます。
